Reading Treasure Chest Early Literacy Program

images_treasure_chest/KIReadLogo.jpg

All children deserve and need the joy of reading.
The first step is reading to them.

The second step is to give them books they can treasure and read again and again.

The Reading Treasure Chest Early Literacy Program is a multi-year ongoing community service project of the Kiwanis Club of San Marcos and the Kiwanis Club of San Marcos Foundation, a non-profit 501(c) entity.  Our goal is to place wooden treasure chests built by members and filled with books (the treasure from the Good Ship Literacy) in every kindergarten classroom in the San Marcos Unified School District.

Remember the joy you felt while learning to read?  Bring that joy to a young child today!

Young children who regularly listen to books become strong readers.

Strong readers are more likely to succeed academically.

The only behavior that significantly correlates with reading scores is the number of books in the home.

An analysis of national data on nearly 100,000 US school children found that access to printed materials - and not poverty - is the "critical variable affecting reading acquisition."

The Treasure Chest, which is shared by the morning and afternoon classes, includes 100 books, the Pirate Island Flannel Package which includes a 23" x 31" felt background scene, over 70 pre-cut felt figures, 23 learning and play ideas and 3 complete lesson plans.  In addition, each teacher is provided with log books for each child to record the books they have read, along with pirate stickers and a series of six fun and educational pirate bookmarks teachers can use as recognition for reading accomplishments.

Children learn to love reading by having their hands filled with books and we encourage teachers to let the children take the books home to read with their parents.  Books are replaced annually and reading incentives are replenished as requested by individual teachers.  Capt'n Book and his merry crew are available to visit schools upon request.
